Having naturally curly hair can be a pain especially if your hair tends to be on the drier side. Curly, coily, and kinky hair can and does produce natural oils. Yet, because our hair texture is curled, those natural oils have a hard time traveling down our hair shaft. This is the main reason our hair feels drier. The goal is to get our hair moisturized and then to keep it moisturized. This can be complicated if you are not using the proper products. It can also be difficult if you are not being consistent in your hair care routine.
What should my hair care routine look like?
The main part of any routine is to focus. You want to make sure that your routine helps you achieve your hair goals. With your hair being drier you have to concentrate on moisturizing your hair. Once you set up your routine you want to stay consistent. Consistency is key.
1. Washing Your Hair: The first step should be to wash your hair. You want to start on a clean canvas. While washing your hair can help you find out your hair type and if you have high or low porosity. You want to use a gentle shampoo. It needs to help with allowing moisture to get into your hair. So you need a sulfate free moisturizing shampoo.
2. After Hair Washing Hydration: After you wash your hair, it can feel dry. It seems like you have stripped your hair of all moisture. In some ways you did. So replacing that moisture is what your next step should entail. You should be using the L.O.C method (liquid, oil, cream). Your liquid was you washing your hair. Now if your hair dries instantly than you should keep a spray bottle handy to rewet your hair. You then want to layer some oil (coconut oil for example). Lastly a cream should be used (leave-in conditioner).
3. Utilizing Protective Styling: The last thing you want to do is use protective styles. Examples include Bantu knots or twist outs. These styles actually help with keeping that moisture locked in.
How often should I wash my hair?
Depending on your hair texture determines when you should wash your hair. With our hair being curly in its natural state we can go longer between washes. I do recommend that if you are experiencing dry hair to wash weekly. You can get away with maybe every other week, it will just take longer to reach your goal.
When washing you hair you want to use a shampoo that will clean your hair and add moisture back.

HONEY CREME SHAMPOO
This shampoo ranges from $14-$82 on the website. I am sure the cost depends on how much you choose to order. You can also buy at Walmart, Target, Ulta Beauty, and Sally’s.
What Products Should I Use?
We have already talked about what type of shampoo to use. Now I want to talk after you wash your hair. I will discuss what products you can use as far as conditioners and oils. There are a ton of conditioners you can use and for dry hair you probably tried many kinds. The problem is you probably been getting the wrong ones or need to try a different kind.
When it comes to your oils you want to use more heavier versions. This will include products like:
PATTERN BY TRACEE ELLIS ROSS
SCALP SERUM
This serum is priced at $28 on the Pattern Beauty website. You can also buy at Target or Sephora, or order off of Amazon.
Then there are your conditioners. You want these to have all the good ingredients needed to add moisture and to help you keep it. Some examples of this will include products like:
DESIGN ESSENTIALS
ALMOND BUTTER CONDITIONER
This conditioner is priced on the website for $13. That’s actually a really good price for a deep conditioner. You can also buy this product at Walmart, Ulta Beauty, and Sally’s.
Just because you hair is dry at this moment does not mean that it can not be fixed. All your hair needs is a little TLC and the proper products. Make sure that when you first start using a product you want to test it out. I would start by using all the same product line first, then start mixing and matching.
