Going Natural: Scalp Treatment and Shampooing

We have discussed the different ways to go natural. (Read our article https://prettytextured.com/going-natural-the-transition-part-1/ and https://prettytextured.com/going-natural-the-big-chop-part ). You can either choose to transition into your natural curl pattern. Then again you may choose to go the Big Chop route. Either choice you choose you still need to make sure you are taking care of your scalp.

This week, I want to discuss scalp treatment and proper shampooing. These are the first learning curves you will embark on. Finding the product that works for your hair goals and overall cleansing the scalp properly. So get a notebook and take some notes.

-Taking Care of Your Scalp-

A woman receives a hair wash at a salon with foam and care.

The first step for overall healthy hair is to learn how to properly take care of your scalp. You need to love and nourish your scalp with healthy products. Well with products that will actually help with your hair goals and will help preserve your hair health. This is the foundation to creating a healthy environment for hair growth. When your scalp is clean and moisturized it promotes hair growth. Dirty hair does not help.

When you become a Naturalista you will use more product. Which will cause more buildup. With this you need to make sure that you are cleaning and nourishing your hair. You can use apple cider vinegar as a treatment to help remove that build up. (Join the Pretty & Textured Community to get access to recipes.)

-Treatments and Tips-

What are some of these treatments? Well the most popular one is an apple cider vinegar scalp treatment. If you decide to use apple cider vinegar, you should do this between your shampoo and conditioner. Make sure to apply it correctly. This treatment soothes the scalp, removes buildup, and heals dry, itchy scalps.

You can also use oils to help with scalp health. Some of those oils are tea tree and peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is great for promoting hair growth. It does this by increasing the blood circulation to the scalp. Tea Tree oil on the other hand is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and great for dandruff. But tea tree oil has to be diluted. It can not be used on the head in its pure form. (Check out our hair oil that has both tea tree oil and peppermint oil. BUY HERE——–https://shopprettytextured.myshopify.com

Now let’s focus on shampooing and its importance. Shampooing removes the oil and dirt residue from your scalp and hair. This is important because it helps the hair get ready for the deposit of conditioner.

I know your question is how often should I wash my hair? Am I right?

Well the answer to that question is simple. You should wash as often as you feel it is needed. How often your hair needs to be washed is determined by what your daily life looks like. The more active you are then the more often you should wash your hair. This is the same for someone who loves to use a ton of product. The main thing when it comes to washing your hair is to not wash it too often.

Overly washing your hair can cause your hair to dry out. Like I mentioned before, shampooing removes the dirt and oil residue. It strips all your hair of the nutrients it needs. This is why applying conditioner after washing your hair is important. It adds back those nutrients.

Shampoos and Conditioners Our Community Loves!

I asked the Pretty & Textured community and some of my fellow stylists what their favorite shampoos and conditioners are. Below is a list of some of those brands.

  1. Cream of Nature Moisture & Shine Shampoo and Conditioner
  2. Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner
  3. Mielle Organics The Pomegranate Line
  4. Matrix Biolage Hydrasource Shampoo
  5. Aussie Moist Conditioner

These are only suggestions of shampoos and conditioners you can use. If the product works for your hair, use it. However, if you notice that it’s not working, change your products.

In conclusion, when it comes to your hair care routine, scalp care is the most important factor to consider. You can’t grow healthy hair if you have an unhealthy scalp that is not properly maintained.
