This week, I started going through all my content. I realized that I never really introduced myself or Pretty & Textured. I started thinking; what type of business person am I to not do that stage. How could I not introduce myself and my brand to the world? I am still learning and making mistakes is a part of learning. So, let this be your first lesson in business. Introduce yourself.

When I decided to start a blog and really show people my passion for educating others on the importance of textured hair care, I didn’t really stop to think about steps. I just started. This can be a good thing or it can cause problems. I had a plan, but not a solid one. I just knew that this was what I wanted to do so I made it a reality.

How it began!

Pretty & Textured has always been a thing. Of course this was not the name at first. Really I didn’t have a name. But if I had to pin point when Pretty & Textured truly became what it is, it was during the time my oldest daughter was struggling with loving her own hair.

We went through days where she would cry because her hair couldn’t just go into a ponytail or that her hair would not just be straight. In those moments I realized that I never really explained to her why her hair was unique. I vowed that day that I would set out to get her to not only understand the uniqueness of her hair but the symbolism behind it as well.

Fast forward 4 years later I had obtained my cosmetology license and started my journey to creating Pretty & Textured. And would you know that in that time she learned to love her hair, as I learned that being in this industry is truly my passion.

I started my journey off in a salon and it was great. I got to work with two different companies and even interviewed for a major salon, but I ultimately decided that I wanted to work by myself. Mainly because the salons I was getting hired at was not the clientele that I was looking to service. Which leads me to another rule of business, do what you love so it never feels like work.

HOW IT’S GOING!

Since I have been working in my own “studio”, it has been very telling. I have learned that while cosmetology school teaches you the fudamentals, they never really prepare you for marketing yourself. This is how I figured out that I wanted to help others in the beauty industry. Especially those who are just starting out. I feel that they need to learn how to maneuver on the business side without getting stressed out.

And I know if I was stressing at first, then I am not the only one.

Now I can say that I have a steady clientele and a few projects on the way. It has gotten easier over time and we are still growing and expanding. It is nice to know that Pretty & Textured is not only a salon studio or dream. It ahs become a place where you can learn the importance of protecting your curls. It has become a place where I am teaching others how to make a price list or how to do individual braids. It’s more than a salon it’s a brand.
