The transition is just one choice you can make to become a Naturalista. The other choice is what we are going to talk about. But first let’s review.
When you transition you grow out your natural curl pattern. As time passes you will start to cut off your chemically treated hair. Eventually, you will have removed all the chemically treated hair.
So, what’s the other choice you ask. Well that’s simple, it’s The Big Chop!
What’s The Big Chop?
The Big Chop is when you just go ahead and cut off all of your chemically treated hair at once. Now this does not automatically mean that you will have to go bald. Depending on how much hair growth you have before you cut it will decide how short your hair will be.
But, the Big Chop has some pros though. You have to remember that you are starting a new hair journey. There will be things that you have to learn. The plus is that it will be easier when you get ready. Imagine just waking up and moisturizing your hair. That was a dream for me so I elected to do the big chop when I decided to go natural.
Below is a list of things that you will experience. These things will be frustrating, but it will be worth the time and effort eventually.
- The Awkward Stage.
- Finding the right products.
- Trial and Error with styles.
The Awkward Stage
The “awkward stage” is the part in this process where your really don’t know what to do. It will feel like nothing works. No style looks good on you. Or you just can’t get things to go right with your hair. Words of wisdom, don’t give up this is just a hurdle you have to get over.
At first, this stage will make you regret your decision. You are just learning how to take care of your hair in its natural state. Give yourself the grace. It takes time and patience, this isn’t something you just learn overnight.
Finding the Right Products
When it comes to shopping for products you want to make sure you know exactly what your hair needs. This means you need to know your hair’s porosity (we will talk about this later). You need to make sure that your products have water as the main ingredient.
Trial and Error with Styles
Now when it comes to styling your hair, there will be some trial and error involved. Especially during the awkward stage. The “awkward stage” can last up to 2 years. But once you find what works and what doesn’t, keep a note of it.

In conclusion, no matter which choice you make about you natural hair journey, it will be tough. There where will be days that you will just want to give up, but don’t do it. It will get easier over time with the more you learn. Your goal should be to learn your hair and help it stay healthy and grow.
